D. José da Costa Nunes Kindergarten - New Wing

The expansion of D. José da Costa Nunes kindergarten resulted in an unusual educational complex, a sequence of connected buildings intertwined with the surrounding traffic infrastructure. The new wing, designed by Ar. Mário Duque, contrasts with the austere Art-deco original building by using a dynamic geometric volumetric compositions, emphasized with primary colors and origami themed surfaces and spaces. The new complex creates a tridimensional challenge for toddlers with a playful sequence of peculiar spaces, from a playground labyrinth, to bridges, ramps, looking into the immediate context to create a protected urban experience.
