The expansion of the fire station by Helena Pinto explores the creative potential of dialogue between historical and contemporary. The original project was preserved as a museum while the new fire station facilities were placed in the new building. The new intervention follows a Deconstructivist approach by separating the volume and the structure. The use of overlapping volumes in the new fire station contrasts with the old building’s symmetrical composition. A new block was introduced to intersect with the old building as a transition between the old and new, public and private. It forms a visual corridor that enables museum visitors a glimpse of the new fire station behind to understand a fire station in modern life.
