About

The current Office of the Secretary for Security at Calçada dos Quartéis was formerly the St. Francis Monastery in 1580 managed by the Spanish Franciscans. The monastery was later abandoned due to the reform of the Roman Church. In 1861, the abandoned monastery was converted into a military camp by José Tomás d’Aquino and the Portuguese military officially stationed in the camp in 1866 December 30. The Portuguese soldiers later in 1970s withdrew the city and the camp was then transformed into the security department. In 1984 the entrance hall was revamped into an exhibition hall.
